Reconsideration of Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122B,
Application No. 1942541, and Application No. 1942717
On August 28, 2023, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) issued a notice of hearing for Proceeding ID 439, indicating that a public hearing would be held for Application No. 1942717 from Greenfire Resources Operating Corporation (Greenfire). The AER has decided to incorporate the hearing for Proceeding ID 439 into the hearing for Proceeding ID 427.
Description of the Proceeding
On April 18, 2022, the AER approved Greenfire’s disposal scheme of Class Ib fluids into the Clearwater Formation subject to the terms and conditions within Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122. On July 19, 2022, Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122A replaced 13122 with further terms and conditions, including requirements Greenfire had to meet prior to commencing disposal through the 00/02-15-084-11W4/0 well. On July 21, 2022, Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122A was replaced by Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122B.
On March 29, 2023, Greenfire submitted Application No. 1942541, seeking to rescind a clause in Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122B that requires additional monitoring wells.
On April 17, 2023, the AER issued notice of hearing for Proceeding 427, indicating that it would hold a public hearing to reconsider Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122A.
On April 17, 2023, Greenfire submitted Application No. 1942717, seeking an approval to install an open-loop ground source heat exchange cooling system into the Clearwater Formation. As mentioned above, the AER issued a notice of hearing for Proceeding ID 439 for this application.
On July 18, 2023, the AER issued a second notice of hearing for Proceeding ID 427, indicating that it would hold a public hearing to reconsider Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122B and application 1942541, since the application seeks to amend the disposal scheme under reconsideration. The notice indicated that Class Ib Disposal Approval No. 13122B is the active approval authorizing Greenfire to carry out the disposal operations into the Clearwater Formation as it replaced the 13122A approval.
The parties in both Proceeding ID 427 and 439 requested that the hearings be combined. As such, the AER has decided that the hearing for Proceeding ID 439 will be incorporated into the hearing for Proceeding ID 427. All correspondence and exhibits filed in relation to either of these proceedings will now be filed under Proceeding ID 427.
