The Alberta Energy Regulator throws back to construction in the days before machines

Labour crew is building pipeline

In 1912, labour crews relied on muscle power alone for 86 days to build Alberta’s first natural gas delivery service: the Bow Island Pipeline.

Construction began on April 22, 1912. The 16-inch, 270-kilometre pipeline from Bow Island, Alberta to Lethbridge and Calgary was constructed by labour crews who lay down pipe by hand. The literally groundbreaking machinery used in construction today wasn’t an option back then, yet the Bow Island Pipeline still delivered gas to Albertans by July 12 of that same year.
