A pump jack has been painted pink for breast cancer awareness

Alberta - October 01, 2018

Fall colours are celebrated all over Alberta—the oranges, yellows, and pinks. Yes, pink. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and one town in northern Alberta has added pink to its fall colour repertoire via a pump jack.

A pump jack in Bezanson, a community located about 30 clicks east of Grande Prairie, has been given a fresh pink paint job, courtesy of Rick Holman. Holman’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, which is when he decided to make a statement and raise awareness about a disease that will be diagnosed for an estimated 26 300 woman and 230 men this year.

The new paint job has gathered support from Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.—the pumpjack’s operator—and the community, and there are hopes that it will continue to be a source of discussion and action in the fight against breast cancer. For more about this, read the story in My Grande Prairie Now.
