Today we released Manual 021: Contamination Management. The purpose of this manual is to assist industry in understanding the regulatory requirements and expectations for remediating contamination related to oil and gas, in situ, and pipeline activities regulated by the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The manual does not introduce any new requirements; it follows the requirements of the Remediation Regulation released under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and includes an overview of key concepts and the remedial measures process to support the management and closure of contaminated sites. While the regulatory requirements described in the manual apply to all activities regulated by the AER, the report and closure application submission process described in sections 7 through 11 is specific to oil and gas, in situ, and pipelines activities.

Further information on how we administer the Remediation Regulation can be found on our website, www.aer.ca > Regulating Development > Project Closure > Remediation > Remediation Regulation Administration.

A draft of the manual was released on July 7 and public comment was accepted through August 8 (see Bulletin 2021-26). The manual itself and a summary of the feedback, including our responses, are available on our website, www.aer.ca > Regulating Development > Manuals.
